16 June 2010 AHMEDABAD — About 150 husbands, allegedly harassed by their wives, will take out a ‘musical’ protest rally in the city on June 23 to mark the completion of 12 years of the All-India Federation against Atrocities on Husbands by Wives.

Dashrath Devda, president of the Ahmedabad-based federation, told Khaleej Times that similar novel processions had been scheduled on the same day in four other major cities of Gujarat. The rallies would be joined by family members of the ‘oppressed’ husbands.“Scores of false cases are being filed by wives every year under Sections 498A of IPC, the domestic violence Act, the dowry prohibition Act, and related civil and criminal laws to extract huge amounts of money as alimony and maintenance from husbands,” said Devda, who himself lives in a ramshackle hut after being thrown out of his home allegedly by his wife. June 23 will be observed by the federation as ‘Freedom Day’. The protesting husbands will gather at the Gandhi Ashram, light 12 incense sticks in a symbolic celebration of the federation’s 12th birthday.

Devda said that the marchers would sing songs, play different musical instruments and dance away their blues through the 4km route of the rally with supporters carrying banners and cartoons lampooning the anti-husband laws.

The procession will take a break at another Gandhi memorial where members and others will narrate their stories of alleged harassment and torture at the hands of their wives. Free legal guidance will be given to those suffering from wives’ ‘atrocious’ behaviour.

“There is no need to scrap the laws favouring women but there needs to be checks and balances to see that these laws are not misused to settle scores with husband and his family. Also these laws should be made ‘gender neutral’ so that those husbands who are victim of domestic violence are also able to lodge complaint against errant wives,” said Devda.
